Blog: Sun Safety Tips from an Esthetician: How to Protect Your Skin This Summer

While we all love basking in the warmth of the sun, it's crucial to take steps to protect our skin from damage. Here are my top safety tips for enjoying the sun while keeping your skin in great shape.

1. Choose the Right Sunscreen

Broad-Spectrum Protection:Opt for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. This ensures comprehensive coverage against the sun's harmful effects.

SPF Matters: Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Need recommendations for SPF? Not a problem, i have a large variety to pick from. My current favorites right now are the Colorescience Collection

2. Apply Sunscreen Correctly

Don’t Skimp on Application:Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to all exposed areas of your skin. Most adults need about an ounce (a shot glass full) to cover their entire body.

Reapply Regularly: Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, and more often if you're swimming or sweating. Even water-resistant sunscreens need to be reapplied after being in the water.

Cover All Areas:Don’t forget easy-to-miss spots like your ears, the back of your neck, your hands, and the tops of your feet. For your lips, use a lip balm with SPF, I love the Colorescience lip shine.

3. Wear Protective Clothing

UPF Clothing:Clothing with a Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating offers excellent protection. These garments are designed to block UV rays and come in stylish options for summer.

Hats and Sunglasses:A wide-brimmed hat protects your face, neck, and shoulders. Sunglasses with 100% UV protection shield your eyes and the delicate skin around them from sun damage.

4. Stay in the Shade

Avoid Peak Sun Hours:The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense.

Create Your Own Shade: Use umbrellas, canopies, or shade tents when at the beach or park to provide a respite from direct sunlight.

 5. Hydrate and Nourish Your Skin

Drink Plenty of Water:Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

Use Hydrating Skincare Products: Apply a hydrating serum and moisturizer daily to keep your skin supple and prevent dryness caused by sun exposure.

6. Mind Your Medications and Treatments

Be Aware of Photosensitivity: Certain medications and skincare treatments can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Consult with your healthcare provider or esthetician if you’re unsure about your products.

Avoid Aggressive Treatments Before Sun Exposure: Treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and some laser procedures can make your skin more vulnerable to UV damage. Schedule these treatments during times when you’ll be out of the sun.

7. Monitor Your Skin for Changes

Regular Skin Checks: Keep an eye on your skin for any new moles or changes to existing ones. Early detection of skin abnormalities is crucial for preventing serious conditions like skin cancer.

Consult a Professional: Schedule regular check-ups with a dermatologist to ensure your skin stays healthy. An esthetician can also provide personalized skincare advice and treatments tailored to your skin type and concerns.

Conclusion

Taking care of your skin during the summer is essential for maintaining its health and beauty. By following these tips, you can enjoy the sun while minimizing the risk of damage. Remember, prevention is the best protection. Stay sun-safe, and your skin will thank you for it!
